In 1954, the two cross-river boroughs amalgamated, and the new municipality was given a new name. After obtaining the athlete's remains from his wife, Jim Thorpe constructed a memorial in honor of the Oklahoma native, who started his sporting career while attending the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 100 miles (161 kilometers) to the southwest. His grave, two sculptures of him in active stances, and historical markers outlining his life's events are all located at the memorial site. The earth donated by Thorpe's birthplace, Oklahoma, and the Stockholm Olympic Stadium, where he won his Olympic medals, is used to build the grave's mounds.
